'Blue Bloods' season 7, and why we care about Jamie and Eddie

Jamie and Eddie -

Mrs. Carter: It's time to raise some questions with one of TV's most-popular potential couples…

What's with the passion behind the Jamie / Eddie pairing on "Blue Bloods"? Is the show really about that? If we saw these questions raised, our response to it would "that's fair," given that it is a fairly reasonable point to question why in the world a romantic subplot matters so much within the world of police work. The writers have over the past few years shied away from these sort of stories, and there are a myriad of reasons for it.

For one, this is a crime procedural, and the purpose of it, as alluded to in one of the earlier questions, is to get in, throw some cases at the wall, see if the main characters can figure out how to solve them, and then eventually get out. This is also a show that is heavily syndicated, and with that you have to imagine that there is an appeal to not changing things too much for the sake of continuity. If you're watching episodes late at night on some random television station, it probably feels weird to have characters in a relationship one week and then single in the next with no mentioning of what happened.

In some ways, we consider the popularity and interest in the idea of Jamie and Eddie coming from the fact that it presents in some many ways the other rather than the norm with this show. It's the thing that the producers really don't do, so suddenly there is a little more interest in seeing precisely what happens when the idea of this relationship is brought to the table.

It's also not a relationship that came to life overnight. As viewers, we sometimes have a tendency to reject things that are force-fed to us in favor of things that come slowly over time. For example, if a character is particular cast as with the purpose of being a "love interest," you often fail to get the opportunity to see them become anything else. The better course of action is create a great character, get to know them, and then test out the chemistry to see if there is something there. So many shows have botched this over the years, merely because they were a tad too impulsive in the way in which they wanted to bring romance into the mix. We've taken several seasons with Jamie and Eddie to get to the point where we are now, where we've now witnessed the beginnings ofsomethingcourtesy of a kiss.

The operating word there, hence the italics, is of course "something" given that there is no guarantee still that these two will get together. That only adds further in our book to the will-they-or-won't-they of it all and the intrigue, since there is now potentially even more intrigue around the two than there would be otherwise. You still want to know what happens next.

In the end, the amount of passion surrounding this pair should really be seen, even for the relationship-dectrators out there, as a sign of the show's strength more so than anything else. You've created two characters who people love enough to discuss at length. There are many other shows out there that they would not even consider doing this with. It brings another dimension into the show, and with that, it could make every other facet of it richer. Imagine Jamie and Eddie trying to keep their relationship a secret at work, or Eddie eventually showing up for one of the famous Reagan family dinners. What's that dynamic going to be like? We have an environment through this where every change, even the most subtle ones, are exciting.

Now, we just have to get to the point where some of these changes can actually happen. Hopefully, that is coming later this season.
